Michael Simon (theater director)
Michael Simon (born January 25, 1958 in Neumünster ) is a German theater director , opera director and set designer .
Life
Michael Simon came to the theater through the fine arts. In 1978 he began studying stage design with Jürgen Rose in Stuttgart , during which time he worked with the performance group Famili (together with Achim Kubinski ). They performed in Stuttgart, Cologne , Washington and New York . In 1981 he finished his studies and went to New York. From 1982 to 1990 he worked as a set designer for the American choreographer William Forsythe at the Frankfurt Ballet and for acting at theaters in Düsseldorf , Freiburg , Darmstadt , Vienna , Hamburg and Berlin, among others .
For the opera, Simon created sets in Amsterdam from 1989 for directors Pierre Audi and Peter Greenaway . Since 1988 he has worked continuously with the choreographer Jiří Kylián , and since 2006 occasionally with Richard Wherlock at the Basel Ballet . He took his first steps as a director in joint projects with the composer Heiner Goebbels in the Frankfurt Theater am Turm . His first opera productions in Basel , Nuremberg and Darmstadt followed quickly . In 1995 he was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen with his drama production The Black Rider and was voted Young Director of the Year in Theater heute magazine .
Michael Simon was briefly engaged at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin in 1996/1997 and has been working as a freelance director and set designer ever since. From 1998 to 2004 he was professor for the scenography department at the University of Design in Karlsruhe and since 2008 has been in charge of the stage design specialization, Master of Arts in theater at the Zurich University of the Arts .
