Life

The son of a two-wheeler dealer attended secondary school in Mülheim Ruhr until 1958, then completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist at GRAFA Grafische Anstalt Fried. Krupp in Essen with distinction, which enabled him to study at the Ulm School of Design (hfg ulm) in 1961 . With the establishment of the Institute for Film Design Ulm at the hfg ulm in 1962, he studied film with Alexander Kluge , Edgar Reitz and Detten Schleiermacher until 1968.

After studying and teaching at the University of Waterloo in Canada and one year as a director and producer in New Jersey (1970/71), he was appointed Professor for Electronic Arts at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto .

In 1975 he founded lothar spree film production in Frankfurt am Main , developed program concepts and produced countless films for the newly emerging youth program of ZDF until 1988. In many of these productions he worked closely with Wilfried Rimensberger, Creative Producer in London, for example at Rock In Rio and many student express programs. After years in the free media industry with productions for well-known large companies, museums, etc., he returned to television with many cultural documentaries. Many of his films on archeology and media, art and science, opera and stage design, architecture and design, music and artist portraits were shown on ZDF, WDR, SWR, ORF, DRS, RAI and above all ARTE.

In 1992 he was appointed professor for media art / film by Heinrich Klotz to found the new State University for Design Karlsruhe and the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. Here he developed, among other things, an influential EU project on media and science - CHAMP - Çatal Höyük Archeology and Media Project, which, as a model project under the direction of Cambridge University UK Ian Hodder , attracted worldwide attention. The topic of archeology and media became a special topic for the Spree (DAI, Universities Ankara, Cambridge, Karlsruhe, Tübingen) at film festivals (Cinarchea Kiel, Athens, Rovereto) and on television (e.g. Schliemann's Erben ZDF, RAI) for several years. Together with Edgar Reitz, he founded and directed the EIKK European Institute for Cinema Karlsruhe (1995–2002). From 2000 to 2002 he took over the management of the film department at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main.

In 2003 he accepted a call from Tongji University Shanghai to set up a film department at the newly established College of Communication & Art , which was supported by a five-year long-term DAAD professorship . In 2009, the newly founded College of Design & Innovation at CAUP (College of Architecture & Urban Planning at Tongji University) appointed him professor for digital media design . Spree worked and lived in Shanghai and Berlin, produced films, documentaries, media and media art and worked as an expert in setting up media and exchange programs at international media universities.

In addition to his work as an author and producer, Spree recently worked as a professor at numerous universities (including the Free University of Berlin and the Tongji University in Shanghai ). He has a son, Titus Spree, with the filmmaker Recha Jungmann . He died on December 6, 2013 at the age of 71 after a brief serious illness in Berlin.
