Michael Saup (* 1961 in Hechingen ) is a German visual artist in the field of digital art , filmmaker and musician . He lives and works in Berlin .

biography

Saup studied music, computer science and visual communication at the Dominican College of San Rafael , USA, the Furtwangen University and the University of Design in Offenbach am Main . While studying at Dominican College, he began programming in 1980, initially working with the media of film and video. In 1987 he realized flicker , a computer-controlled light installation. From 1989 Saup experimented with the possibility of reciprocal computer-aided transformations of sound and image.

Saup's work initially included the automatic control of video editing through music, then interactive sound-controlled computer animations and finally programs for the real-time conversion of acoustic and optical signals into digital signals, which enabled dancers and musicians to use image-generating electronic devices such as 3D graphics Control workstations, laser disk players or hard disk recorders, thus converting acoustic events into variable visual experiences. These include the film Paradays (1989), installations such as pulse8 (1992) and performative projects such as Hyena Days (1992) (with Steina Vasulka ) and Binary Ballistic Ballet (1995) (with William Forsythe and Ballett Frankfurt ). At Saup, sound, light and space are defined together in a dynamic model. In 1997, the tunnel , a connecting tunnel at Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport and the R111 installation (1999–2004) were built. In 1994 Michael Saup founded the collective supreme particles .

Saup has taught at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts , the HfG Offenbach, the Bremen University of the Arts and the Zurich University of the Arts since 1989 .

From 1991 to 1994 he was an artistic and academic assistant at the Institute for New Media at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main . From 1996 to 1997 he held a substitute professorship at the HfG Karlsruhe , where he then held the professorship for the art of digital media from 1999 to 2005.
