Susanne Gaensheimer (born April 9, 1967 in Munich ) is a German art historian and curator .

Career

Gaensheimer was born as the daughter of the chemist Josef Gänsheimer (* 1930). She is the niece of the art historian Helmut Friedel . Gaensheimer studied art history in Munich and Hamburg . From 1995 to 1996 she completed the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York . In 1997 the theme was “Sexuality and Destruction. Aspects of Violence in the Works of Bruce Nauman at the University of Munich . From 1998 to 1999 she completed an academic traineeship at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. From 1999 to 2001 she was director of the Westphalian Art Association in Münster .

In 2001 she returned to the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus as curator , where she headed the collection for international contemporary art until 2008. In January 2009 she became director of the Museum for Modern Art (MMK) in Frankfurt am Main .

Susanne Gaensheimer curated the German pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia 2011, which was originally to be designed by Christoph Schlingensief . The pavilion set up by Gaensheimer received the "Golden Lion", the highest award at the Biennale. In 2013 she curated the German contribution to the 55th Biennale, where she showed works by the artists Ai Weiwei , Romuald Karmakar and Santu Mofokeng , among others . Under her leadership, the Museum of Modern Art was expanded to include MMK 2 in the Taunusturm . Gaensheimer has been an honorary professor at the Art History Institute of the University of Frankfurt am Main since 2016 . On September 1, 2017, Susanne Gaensheimer took over the management of the North Rhine-Westphalia art collection .

Gaensheimer is married and has two children.
