history

The Breisgau-Verein Schauinsland, founded in 1873, published a monthly magazine , the Schau-in's-Land , when it was founded. The first issues were richly illustrated, the texts initially written by hand and hectographed together with the images . The team of authors brought together young artists, citizens and craftsmen who, in a romantic, historicizing way , dealt with the publication of stories and poems in the style of the new empire under the direction of Fritz Geiges , who contributed most of the drawings. In 1876, the common month names February to April were replaced by the German names Hornung, Lenzmond and Ostermond, but only until 1878, when the magazine only appeared once a year as an anthology.

From 1882 until the last issue during the war in 1941, the title page of the annual volume showed the same graphic design, the Freiburg Rappen , although the magazine title lost the apostrophe that was no longer orthographically correct in 1926. In the economic crisis years from 1923 to 1933, the Schau-ins-Land was only published every two years.

After the war and from the union of the "Society for the promotion of history, antiquity and folklore of Freiburg, the Breisgau and the neighboring landscapes" founded in 1826 with the "Breisgau-Verein Schauinsland", which had existed since 1873, the " Breisgau-Geschichtsverein " was founded in 1946 Schau-ins-Land “(BGV). The new annual publication appeared for the first time in 1949 and, with volume 68, continued the tradition of the old Schau-ins-Land with the addition published by the Breisgau association “Schau-ins-Land” Freiburg i. Br. On the title. From the 97th annual issue in 1978, the annual volume was then called the magazine of the Breisgau-Geschichtsverein and in brackets (“Schau-ins-Land”) to emphasize the scientific claim of the magazine. At the same time, the title page was given a new graphic design. The annual books from 1873 to 2011, digitized by the Freiburg University Library, are available as Freiburg historical holdings . Register volumes open up the content of older volumes.
