Life

Johann Baptist Trenkle was the son of a brewery owner in Freiburg. After attending the Lyceum in Freiburg until 1846, he first studied law and then camera science at the University of Freiburg . Financial problems at home delayed the completion of his studies. In November 1860 he became a camera intern and volunteered at the main tax office in Freiburg. In 1861 he was given the post of registrar at the Grand Ducal Badisches Landesarchiv under the archivist Joseph Bader , who supported him and encouraged him to study history. In 1866, Trenkle was promoted from a camera intern to registrar at the General State Archives in Karlsruhe. In 1869 Trenkle was appointed secretary at the Administrative Court, a position he held until his retirement on August 9, 1890. Trenkle was already ailing during his tenure, which now intensified.
