life and work

Lucian Reich's father was the school teacher, sculptor and painter Lucian Reich (the elder) , his grandfather was Mathias Reich and his brother-in-law was the lithographer and photographer Johann Nepomuk Heinemann , with whom he worked closely. His brother Franz Xaver Reich was a sculptor. Lucian Reich received his first drawing lessons at his father's painting and drawing school. He took lessons at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt under the painter Philipp Veit , and later went to Munich. From 1855 to 1899 he worked as a drawing teacher at the Lyceum in Rastatt . One of his students there was Heinrich Hansjakob .

In addition to pictures in oil and lithography, he also painted pictures for churches, e. B. 1867 for St. Birgitta in Iffezheim , where he created murals of Saints Bernhard, Wendelin, Sebastian and Johann von Nepomuk. In 1877 a contract for two more pictures followed, only one of which has survived. The two side altar paintings in the parish church in Hüfingen were made by him, in the Ottilien chapel in Bräunlingen the ceiling painting of St. Ottilie and a mural in the choir showing St. Sebastian. In 1865 he also created an altarpiece for St. Leon and a representation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary for the Bernhardus Church in Rastatt . The three planned choir pictures from the life of St. Gall for the new church in Altschweier (1866) and cardboard drawings for two windows in Rippoldsau (1859) were not implemented. He was also active as a costume painter .

As a religious folk writer he wrote, among others: Brother Martin (1853) and Hieronymus .

He was in contact with his uncle Johann Nepomuk Schelble , Moritz von Schwind , Joseph Bader and Victor Scheffel, among others .

One of his great-great-great-nieces is the musician, painter and writer Hortense von Gelmini .

reception

Joseph Sauer describes Sebastian Luz's religious portrayal and adds that the latter would apply even more to Reich:

“As in religious expression, these works also remain strongly on the surface in color, despite the correctness of drawing and composition. The artist is much more original and free in the genre and in his descriptions of the Black Forest. "

- Joseph Sauer

The philosopher Martin Heidegger was often in Hüfingen over several decades. There his sister Marie was married to the district chimney sweep master Rudolf Oschwald. During one such visit in May 1940 he wrote to his wife Elfriede:

"I have found a" Hieronymus "here (not on my own, but to read), a description of Baar and others. of the Black Forest from the previous century; very simple u. unadventurous."

- Martin Heidegger

In Rastatt a street was named after Lucian Reich and in his hometown of Hüfingen the primary and secondary school at that time, now a community school.
