Rudolf Gleichauf (born July 29, 1826 in Hüfingen ; † October 15, 1896 in Karlsruhe ) was a German history and costume painter. In particular, he created wall paintings for buildings belonging to the Baden construction department.
Life
Simultaneously attended the rural drawing school of the senior teacher Lucian Reich (father of the sculptor Franz Xaver Reich and the painter-poet Lucian Reich ). After Reich had sent some illustrations of the then ten-year-old Gleichauf to Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and this confirmed his talent, Gleichauf received a scholarship from Prince Karl Egon III. zu Fürstenberg at the Munich Academy with Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Schnorr von Carolsfeld followed immediately in 1846 to Dresden at the Dresden Academy , where he made numerous copies of old master paintings.
In 1848 he returned to Baden for a while. In 1850 he was at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main . At that time he decorated the pump room in Baden-Baden with a children's frieze. There is also a relief made of burnt clay from Gleichauf, which depicts the Turks Louis .
From Frankfurt he was appointed to Karlsruhe by Oberbaudirektor Heinrich Hübsch to decorate the buildings of the Oberbaudirektion with wall paintings. He continued this activity under Huebsch's successor Josef Durm . The representation of Hygieia on the gable of the Vierordtbad belongs to Gleichauf's works from this period . At the same time he created a picture in fresco painting, which, however, had faded within two decades. This is why the picture was transferred to ceramic using the litho-acoustics process in 1892 and was thus preserved. Gleichauf created the tondi ceiling in the old auditorium of Heidelberg University in 1885/86. An altarpiece by Rudolf Gleichauf in the Catholic Church in Kronau has also been preserved . The Heilig Kreuz church in Bietigheim was also adorned with an altarpiece from Gleichauf. It shows the discovery of the holy cross. Another painting in a sacred room is Christ erupted with the women at the grave in the apse of the cemetery chapel in the Karlsruhe main cemetery .
In addition to numerous wall paintings, Gleichauf also created 39 watercolors and a large number of costume studies on behalf of the Baden court and the Baden government between 1862 and 1869, which have been preserved in the Baden state collection and were planned for an "extensive Baden costume", which, however, was not was completed. In 2009/2010, the exhibition Gegenüber with works by Rudolf Gleichauf was on view at the Museum of Art and History in Hüfingen .
A sister of Rudolf Gleichauf was married to the artist Joseph Heinemann from Hüfingen, a brother of Johann Nepomuk Heinemann .
