The Hagdorn Muschelkalkmuseum at Schlossstrasse 3 in Ingelfingen is a geological and paleontological museum in the German state of Baden-Württemberg .

Exhibits

The theme of the permanent exhibition is the Triassic Period in Central Europe . At that time, the conditions there were subtropical . For about eight million years, today's mainland was covered by the Muschelkalkmeer . In the Muschelkalkmuseum you can see fossil remains of the former sea creatures such as sea lilies and tank burrows . The exhibits come primarily from Germany, France and Poland.

A special exhibition with Triassic sea lilies and other echinoderms from China and a presentation on the tribal history of the sea urchins go beyond the borders of Europe .

Rocks and minerals are also presented. One focus is the geological history of the Kochertal , which is characterized by gravel banks and sintered limestone . Like the largely parallel Jagst, the Kocher has dug itself deep into the various layers of rock over the centuries. In about 200 m deep valley Ingelfinger, the river through the shell to the uppermost red sandstone down worked. A threefold structure of Upper , Middle and Lower Muschelkalk can be seen on the southern slopes . While steep slopes predominate in the upper and lower layers, which are particularly hard, in the Middle Muschelkalk, which was significantly softer, a flatter slope of the terrain was created by washing out.

Winegrowers gathered the limestone lumps into piles of stones and stone bars , which marked the plot boundaries of the vineyards and are typical of the Franconian wine-growing landscape.

A borehole near Ingelfingen was driven to a depth of more than 800 m and revealed the sequence of layers of the rocks. The results are shown in the Muschelkalkmuseum as well as exhibits on historical drilling technology.

There are around 50,000 individual items in the museum's magazine.

Others

The museum is supported by Hans Hagdorn , the city of Ingelfingen and the Alberti Foundation of the Hohenloher Muschelkalkwerke, established in 1998 . It has been in the Innere Kelter since 1996 and is also open on Sundays and from May to October on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In 2009 the museum was rebuilt and expanded so that the exhibition area is now around 600 m². The collection of Werner Kugler , whom the Focus described as Germany's “dinosaur king”, was added to the previous holdings . Foundations and loans from numerous institutions supplemented the holdings.
