Freiburg History Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freiburg History Association was an association that dealt with the history of the city and the surrounding area of Freiburg im Breisgau . It went back to the Society for the Promotion of History in Freiburg , founded in 1826 , and merged in 1946 with the Breisgau-Verein Schauinsland, founded in 1873, to form the Breisgau-Geschichtsverein Schau-ins-Land .

history

The historian Ernst Münch (1798–1841) initiated the establishment of a history association in Freiburg in 1826.

The constitution took place on December 27, 1827. In addition to Münch, the founding members also included Karl von Rotteck , Heinrich Schreiber , Ernst Julius Leichtlen , Johann von Türckheim , Kasimir Walchner and Karl Zell . The purpose of the association was to "promote the study of history, statistics and antiquity (both of the latter initially in relation to Germany, and in particular to the Grand Duchy of Baden), and also to keep patriotic antiquities."

In 1828 the first volume of the club magazine appeared. In the years that followed, conferences with lectures on historical topics were held, but apart from Schreiber, hardly any speaker dealt with local and regional history. From 1846 to 1866 there were no activities of the association.

On August 1, 1866, the association was revived on the initiative of Cajetan Jäger , whereby the activity was now regionally limited. The purpose of the association was now: "Maintaining the history, antiquity and folklore of Freiburg dem Breisgau and the neighboring landscapes." The membership was primarily made up of scholars, diplomats, officers, pastors and teachers. In 1873 the Breisgauverein Schauinsland was founded in Freiburg, which also dealt with the local history, but also cultivated sociability and organized mountain hikes in the Black Forest. Here the membership consisted mainly of artists, merchants and craftsmen, but even then there were people who belonged to both associations.

The historical association and the Breisgau association converged in their way of working and double memberships increased. After the historical association became obsolete and the number of members decreased, it was obvious to strive for a merger with the Breisgau Association, which then took place after the Second World War.

Initially, the volumes appeared at irregular intervals.

From 1900 to 1908 the historical association cooperated with the magazine Alemannia, which appeared at this time with the additional title Simultaneously magazine of the Society for History of Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1909 Fridrich Pfaff dissolved the cooperation with the historical association, which then continued the journal of the society for the promotion of history, antiquity and folklore of Freiburg, the Breisgau and the adjacent landscapes until 1927.

In 1928 the historical association called the Freiburg History Association and published the journal of the Freiburg History Association until 1938 .

After the Second World War, the Freiburg History Association merged with the Breisgau Association Schauinsland. The new Breisgau history association Schau-ins-Land continued the magazine Schau-ins-Land with the additional title annual issue of the Breisgau history association Schauinsland .
