Heinrich Schützinger (born June 23, 1857 in Weißenburg , † September 15, 1920 in Lindau ) was a German lawyer, local politician and local researcher.

Live and act

After studying law and one year of military service with the royal Bavarian infantry regiment in Munich, Schützinger was a legal advisor in Bayreuth from 1885 before he was elected legally qualified mayor of Lindau in 1894. During his time as mayor, the city was first expanded and modernized, for example with the opening of the railway line to Friedrichshafen in 1899 or the construction of a municipal power station in 1900. The island location, however, did not allow for intensive industrialization; This took place in the mainland municipality of Reutin , which was independent until 1922 , where the Swiss truck manufacturer Saurer opened a branch in 1910. During the First World War and immediately afterwards, the Lindau city administration had to organize supplies for the population. Schützinger resolutely faced these tasks until the collapse of his health in autumn 1919 forced him to resign.

Another field of activity Schützinger was the regional history , which he promoted both organizationally and through his own research. As president of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings , he raised the funds for a modern association museum (“ Bodensee Museum ”) through a donation campaign , which was opened in Friedrichshafen in 1912; one of the main sponsors was Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin . Later the maintenance was too much for the club; the city of Friedrichshafen acquired the collection and continued it as a city museum. Schützinger wrote articles on contemporary history with a strong contemporary reference , which mostly appeared in the writings of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings . For his services to historical research, Schützinger received the Bavarian Ludwig Medal for Science and Art on October 19, 1918, on occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Bodensee History Association ; the University of Freiburg i. Br. An honorary doctorate in philosophy and the Bodensee-Geschichtsverein an honorary member. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of service as mayor, in 1919 he received the honorary citizenship of the city of Lindau.

Schützinger set up a summer apartment in the Lindau Powder Tower on the western tip of the island. The way from the powder tower to the harbor is now called "Schützingerweg".
