The powder tower stands at the westernmost point of the island town of Lindau in Lake Constance and is part of the city wall.

Fortification and defense tower

This fortification was probably considered necessary as a result of the Swiss War. It is a round tower with a tent roof built in 1508 . The fortified tower was included in the walling of the city when the area of the “rear island” in Lindau, on which fields, vineyards and a cemetery were located at that time, was fortified.

At the beginning of the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648), the original pointed roof was two meters lower in order to offer less attack surface. Lindau was finally besieged by the Swedish troops in 1646/47 and the construction of the defense helped to protect the city until the Swedes could be repulsed by the imperial occupation forces.

Powder tower and later use

Towards the end of the 18th century, the previous fortified tower finally became a powder tower , which gave it its current name. After the Napoleonic Wars, the Lindau vigilantes stored their powder in the tower.

The interior of the tower was structurally modified in 1897/98, as it was given to Lindau's mayor Heinrich Schützinger as a summer apartment:
a lounge was set up on the ground floor with its two meter thick walls and the upper floor was made accessible by a staircase. Externally nothing was changed when the complete renovation was carried out under the care of the architect and Lindau honorary citizen Prof. Friedrich von Thiersch .

In 1904, the military moves into the newly built, after the former Bavarian prince regent named Luitpold barracks on the rear or western island one. When the French occupied Lindau in 1945 without a fight and took up positions in the barracks, they also took possession of the powder tower and it was not released again until the spring of 1952.

The Powder Tower has been owned by Stadtwerke Lindau since 1969, it was renovated in 1988 by restorer Wolfram Kronmüller and today meetings and conferences are held here.

Additional pole protection in the lake

In the area of the island of Lindau, remains of a former pole defense in the water of Lake Constance were documented for further fortification , which are already shown in a realistic representation of the island from 1650.

Especially in the cold winter months, when the water level is low, several rows of stakes can be seen around the island of Lindau - and especially in front of the powder tower. This row of stakes runs for a length of about 50 meters parallel to the current bank line and then describes an arc in a north-easterly direction before it meets the current bank and ends there.
