Caspar Merian
Caspar Merian (born February 13, 1627 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 12, 1686 Waltha Castle, West Friesland ) was one of the most important topographical engravers and publishers of the Baroque era . He came from the Frankfurt-based branch of the Merian family in Basel .
life and work
Caspar Merian was a son and student of the engraver Matthäus Merian the Elder. Ä. (1593–1650) and his wife Maria Magdalena geb. de Bry. As an employee of his father, he worked temporarily in Paris and Nuremberg.
After the death of his father, he ran the Frankfurt publishing house together with his brother Matthäus the Elder. J. Both continued the publication of the major works started by their father, the Topographia Germaniae and the Theatrum Europaeum , and made numerous other engravings for them.
In 1672 Merian withdrew to Wertheim on medical advice . In 1677 he moved to West Friesland and joined the radical Protestant religious community of the Labadists , with whom he lived until his death. In 1685 he also had his half-sister Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), whose mother Johanna Catharina Sibylla nee. Heim and his sister's two daughters were taken to his Waltha Castle.
