Eduard Hindelang

Eduard Hindelang (born November 9, 1923 in Obergünzburg ; † March 14, 2016 ) was a German museum director. He was the founder and director of the Langenargen Museum .

Hindelang was a soldier in World War II. After his release from French captivity, he worked as a merchant in Kressbronn on Lake Constance from 1947 . After his marriage to Irmgard Loser, he moved to Langenargen in 1956 and worked as an authorized signatory. When the old rectory was threatened with demolition in the mid-1970s, he launched a citizens' initiative to save the building. The activities culminated in the establishment of a local history museum in the rectory; In 1975 Hindelang founded a museum association, of which he was honorary first chairman from 1976 to 2012, after which he was honorary chairman for life. From 1975 to 2000 Hindelang was the treasurer of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings . The association dedicated a publication to him in 1986 and made him an honorary member in 2000.

At the suggestion of Eugen Biser , he became a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . For his services, Hindelang was awarded the Merit Medal of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1977, the Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1983 and the Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2010. In 1991 he received the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit . In 2001 the municipality of Langenargen made him an honorary citizen . On January 25, 2005, he was awarded the honorary title “Professor honoris causa” by the Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg for his successful work in the arts. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him a Knight of the Order of the Holy Pope Silvester .
