Christian Roder (born December 5, 1845 in Dangstetten , † May 4, 1921 in Überlingen ) was a German teacher, archivist and historian.

Life

Roder's parents were the community calculator and farmer Xaver Roder and Katharina nee Mühlhaupt. He was supposed to become a priest and went to the district school in Zurzach and then to the Lyceum in Konstanz . The time of the Baden Kulturkampf moved him to study classical philology , especially Latin and Greek . In 1872 he passed the state examination and became a teacher in Karlsruhe . This was followed Schwetzingen , Ladenburg , and Villingen , where he was a professor at the local junior high school from 1876 to 1892. He was then called to Rastatt for a short time and was soon entrusted with the management of the secondary school in Überlingen , where he worked until 1912.

In Villingen, Roder was also head of the city archive. Various important writings on the history of Villingen come from him. He was in contact with Sigmund Riezler and Franz Ludwig Baumann . Roder developed the holdings of the city archive and presented a repertory of the archive in 1886. He published the Villinger Chronik of the councilor Heinrich Hug , which describes the time of the Peasant War . He also worked on the history of the Swiss War of 1499.

His life's work was the history of the city of Villingen. He edited the manuscripts , yet his work was not receiving enough recognition that he gave up in frustration before publishing it. Another attempted attempt to publish it failed at the beginning of the First World War. The Laupp printing house in Tübingen returned the manuscripts to him due to a lack of typesetting staff. In 1970 the 1085 pages were published in the series of the city of Villingen.

In Überlingen he was a member of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings, which still exists today, and was elected to the board in 1902. Roder was Vice President and later an honorary member.

As early as 1885 he became an extraordinary member of the Baden Historical Commission for his historical work and was appointed Hofrat . In 1918 he received the Baden Knight's Cross of Bertholds des Zähringer .

Roder was buried in his home town of Dangstetten.
