The Antonierkirche Bern

The Antoniterkirche (also: Antonierkirche ) is a Gothic church at Postgasse 62 in the old town of Bern .

history

The Bernese House of the Antonite Order ( Tönier, Tönierherren ) was founded before 1283 as a branch of Chambéry and was given special attention by donors in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Rebleuten Society had its altar here as well as the Shoemaker Brotherhood. The chapel was rebuilt in 1444 and 1492 to 1494. In 1520 Niklaus Manuel completed the Antonier Altar (today in the Bern Art Museum ). In 1528 the church was secularized and from 1533 it was used as a granary. The house was later used as a saddlery and stagecoach shed for the Fischer- Post (until 1831). From 1839 to 1843, the former church served as the antiques hall of the antiquarian society. In 1860, the municipality of Bern purchased the property and used it as an extinguishing equipment store for decades. In 1939/40 it was converted into a Münsterkirchgemeindehaus. This is how Fritz Pauli's fresco cycle came about . On the west wall man is depicted between good and evil, on the south wall the Christmas events and on the west wall the legend of Antonius. The Pauli frescoes are now a listed building along with the entire Antoniterkirche. The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Bern has been using the church and the parish hall since it was founded in 1956 . The chapel of the Russian Orthodox community has been located in the basement since 1944.
