The Berner Taschenbuch was published between 1852 and 1894 and from 1896 to 1934 under the title New Berner Taschenbuch .

The yearbook was founded by Gottlieb Ludwig Lauterburg (1817–1864). Other editors were Franz Lauterburg (1825–1871), Gottfried Ludwig (1832–1889), Emil Blösch (1838–1900), Hans Balmer (1854–1910), Karl Geiser (1862–1930) and in particular Heinrich Türler (1861–1933) ), who accompanied the New Berner Taschenbuch as editor from 1896 and wrote almost a hundred articles.

Based on the model of the Basler Taschenbuch (published 1850 to 1864), Ludwig Lauterburg published the Berner Taschenbuch at Haller Verlag from 1852 onwards. From the first year onwards, the annually published volumes contained articles on historical topics, biographies, source editions , miscommunication, a bibliography as well as poetic works and song texts. In addition to historians, theologians and scientists from other branches also contributed as authors. Each year contains at least one illustration (lithograph). From the year 1862 onwards, the Bern Chronicle was published annually at the end of the volume, a review of the year with information on important events. After the death of the then federal archivist Heinrich Türler, the publication was stopped. The Berner Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Heimatkunde of the Historical Association of the Canton of Bern , which has been published since 1939, can be viewed as a follow-up publication .
