Johann Valentin Sonnenschein (born May 22, 1749 in Stuttgart , † September 22, 1828 in Bern ) was a German sculptor , plasterer and painter .

Life

Johann Valentin Sonnenschein received his artistic training in the workshops of Ludovico Bossi and Johann Wilhelm Beyer as well as the court painter Nicolas Guibal in his hometown. Between 1763 and 1776 he worked for Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg ; from 1771 in the rank of court plasterer. In the following year he was appointed as a lecturer in design at the Ludwigsburg Art Academy, and as a modeler at the Ludwigsburg porcelain factory . He created eight groups of putti made of lead for the bath house in Schwetzingen Palace Gardens . In 1775, Sonnenschein fled to Zurich and was hired to decorate several halls of the patrician palace "Haus zum Kiel". When the assignment was completed four years later, in 1779 he worked as a drawing teacher at a private art school in Bern for six years . During this time he also worked as a drawing teacher and master modeler in a porcelain factory, presumably this was the porcelain and faience factory in the Schooren in Kilchberg. In 1815, Sonnenschein returned to Germany and helped to decorate the Solitude Palace in Stuttgart . In addition to this and the work in Zurich, Sonnenschein's artistic work consists of statuettes, busts and tombs.

His daughter Regina was married to the Swiss politician and officer Johann Nepomuk von Schmiel .
