The Ober-Gerwern Society is one of the 13 societies and guilds in the city of Bern and a public corporation guaranteed by the constitution of the Canton of Bern . It is a civil corporation within the meaning of Bernese municipal legislation and is subject to the supervision of the cantonal authorities. As a personal corporation, it does not have its own territory and is taxable. It includes all citizens of Bern who have the corporate law of Ober-Gerwern.

The Ober-Gerwern Society appears in the sources for the first time in the 14th century and included the red tanners. From the 15th century one of the four had Venner Berns room journeyman to Gerwern be. The up-and-coming generations of the Venner societies Pfistern, Schmieden, Metzgern and Gerwern thus had a political privilege. Numerous families increasingly devoted themselves to politics and in modern times formed the patriciate. This explains the high number of ruling families on Ober-Gerwern.
