Christoph von Steiger
Christoph Steiger (I.) , also Christoph von Steiger (born November 23, 1651 in Bern ; † August 18, 1731 ibid), was a Swiss magistrate .
Life
Christoph von Steiger came from the Bernese patrician family Steiger with the black goat . He was born in 1651 as the fifth son of Emanuel von Steiger and Catharina Dachselhofer. After receiving his doctorate in Bern at the high schools, he studied theology in Lausanne from 1668 and law in Orléans from 1671 . He then went on a cavalier tour through European countries, where he devoted himself to language studies. Through his marriage to Anna Katharina Berseth in 1678, Steiger came into possession of the Tschugg estate . In 1680 he joined the Grand Council of Bern. Three years later he held the post of United Weibel, and in 1687 he was appointed as Governor of Lenzburg sent. In 1709 he was elected to the Small Council and in 1712 as Welschseckelmeister, so he was Minister of Finance for the French-speaking areas. For his services in the Neuchâtel succession dispute at the suggestion of the Prussian King in 1714, he was raised to the hereditary baron status. From 1718 until his death, he held the office of mayor of Bern alternately.
His contemporary Johann Rudolf Gruner wrote about him: "Christoph Steiger did not lead a large state, but was a model of humility and gentleness." A statement that is underlined by the fact that he did not initiate any major structural measures in Tschugg. He was also recognized for his brilliant speaking talent, his extensive education and because he had often performed a key advisory role.
Christoph Steiger (II.) Was his son.
