Life

Ludwig Rütimeyer's father Albrecht was a pastor in the Emmental , his mother a née Küpfer. He was the fifth of eight children. Rütimeyer attended high school in Bern from 1838. In 1843 he began studying theology at the University of Bern and after four semesters switched to medicine, which he completed in 1850 with the state examination. In 1848 he presented the results of his geological studies of the mountains between Lake Thun and Emme at the 33rd meeting of the Swiss Natural Research Society in Solothurn. 1850 did his doctorate with a study on the Swiss nummulite terrain. In 1848 he was President, then Central President of the Bern section of the Swiss Zofinger Association .

After studying in Paris (with recommendations from his teacher Bernhard Studer ), London and Leiden, as well as stays in southern Italy and Sicily , he completed his habilitation in Bern in 1854. In 1853 he received a call as associate professor for comparative anatomy at the University of Bern and also taught natural sciences at the secondary and industrial school there. In 1855 he got a full professorship at the University of Basel , where he taught until 1894. In 1865 he was rector of the university. At the same time as his work at Basel University, he was head of the natural science institutions, and from 1883 also head of the natural history collection in the museum. From 1877 to 1883 Rütimeyer traveled to Florence, Lyon, Toulouse, Paris and London, where he met Charles Darwin .

Rütimeyer had been married to Laura Fankhauser from Burgdorf , the sister of his sister-in-law , since 1855 . The couple had a son, (Ludwig) Leopold Rütimeyer , who among others was Ludwig Rütimeyer. Published letters and diary sheets.

Act

Rütimeyer researched the prehistoric fauna of Switzerland, but provided extensive investigations into the origin of certain groups of mammals . In his attempt at a natural history of the cattle in its relationship to ruminants in general from 1867, he laid the foundation for a knowledge of the relationships that existed between today's and fossil ruminants and ungulates . He examined the animal remains of the pile dwellings of the Swiss lakes discovered in 1850, the first work on this appeared in 1860. His focus was on the presentation of the changes in animals since that time. Among other things, based on these findings, he also described the peat dog as Canis familiaris palustris Rütimeyer. At the meetings of the Natural Research Society in Basel , of which he was president from 1860 to 1862, he gave 66 lectures and published 36 articles in their negotiations. On April 19, 1863 he was one of the 35 founding members of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), of which he was Vice President in 1864 and from 1870 to 1872. In addition, he was governor, chairman, editor of the 1864 yearbook and honorary member of the section and association for the SAC.
