Bernhard Studer

Bernhard Rudolf Studer (born August 21, 1794 in Büren an der Aare , †  May 2, 1887 in Bern ) was a Swiss geologist , mineralogist and alpinist.

Life

Studer was the son of the Bernese theologian and dean Samuel Studer and his wife Maria Margaretha (born Walther 1766-1805). He first studied theology and mathematics and between 1816 and 1818 astronomy and geology , but had been teaching mathematics at the Bern grammar school since 1815. In 1816 he completed his studies in theology and then studied from 1816 to 1818 in Göttingen and at the Bergakademie Freiberg. From 1818 he was again a teacher at the Bern high school. At the same time, he gave lectures on physics and mathematics at the Bern Academy and headed the mineralogical collection of the Canton of Bern. In 1820 he visited Paris . He then accompanied Leopold von Buch on his travels through the Alps . In 1825, the cantonal government in Bern appointed him to the newly established chair of geology, which he held until 1873.

Studer was also professor of mineralogy at the University of Bern from 1834 . In 1879 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London . From 1854 he was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1845 he also became a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences and since 1882 a foreign member of the Prussian Order pour le merite for science and the arts. Since 1855 he was an honorary member ( Honorary Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1860 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and in 1874 of the Académie des Sciences . In 1882, Studer was also accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He was married to Susanna Louise (born May 27, 1810 in Bern; † August 11, 1874 ibid), a daughter of pastor Samuel Gottlieb Hünerwadel , since March 1 .

Bernhard Studer died on May 2, 1887 in Bern. He was the cousin of Gottlieb Samuel Studer and brother of the theologian Gottlieb Ludwig Studer .
