Samuel Studer
Samuel Emanuel Studer (born November 18, 1757 in Bern , † August 21, 1834 there ) was a Swiss Protestant Reformed pastor, theologian and natural scientist .
Life
Studer was a son of the butcher Samuel Studer and his wife Maria Magdalena Hartmann. A younger brother was the notary, court clerk and artist Sigmund Gottlieb Studer . In 1789 he married Maria Margaretha Walther, a daughter of the ironworks manager Friedrich Walther. After studying theology at the High School in Bern, Studer was ordained in 1781 and initially worked as a preacher at the Bern Burgerspital . In 1789 he became pastor in Büren an der Aare . He returned to Bern in 1796 as a professor of practical theology at the high school. In 1805 he took over the chair of homiletics .
Studer was a co-founder of the Swiss Society for Natural Research and the Society for Natural Research in Bern .
He was one of the earliest proponents of the theory of evolution . Samuel Studer was awarded honorary doctorates from the universities of Erlangen (1801) and Basel (1828).
