Alfred Armand Adolf von Steiger (born July 25, 1859 in Bern ; † March 1, 1925 there , entitled to live in Bern) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ) and lawyer .

From 1900 to 1918 he was Mayor of Bern and from 1919 to 1925 Federal Chancellor .

biography

The son of a senior librarian from the old patrician family of Bern studied law at the universities of Bern , Leipzig and Geneva . From 1884 to 1893 he ran a law firm in Bern. After two years as a substitute judge, he was a member of the Bern Higher Court from 1893 . In 1900 he was elected mayor of Bern as a representative of the Liberals. In addition, he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern from 1903 to 1917 and a Council of States from 1908 to 1918.

In 1918, von Steiger began his professional activity in the Federal Chancellery as Vice Chancellor . The following year, he chose the Federal Assembly for Chancellor . In doing so, he asserted himself against the Catholic-conservative Solothurn National and Council of States Siegfried Hartmann . When he took office, a new law on the Federal Chancellery came into force, relieving the Federal Chancellor of keeping minutes in the National Council. In 1925, von Steiger died of a stroke while in office .
