Reinhold Bosch was born in Zurich on May 8, 1887 , as the son of the southern German merchant Reinhold Bosch and Elisabeth (née Schaufelberger) from the Zurich Oberland, who ran a cloth shop in Zurich. Bosch studied German literature and history at the Universities of Zurich and Berlin and completed his studies in Zurich in 1912 with a higher teaching degree and received his doctorate with his dissertation The Grain Trade of Northern, Eastern and Central Switzerland and the Enetbirgian Bailiwicks in the 15th and 16th centuries .

In 1913, the community of Seengen appointed Bosch to their district school , where he a. taught German, history, Latin, geography and drawing. After the active service years 1914–1918, Bosch began to deal intensively with the history of the Seetal . He carried out his first major archaeological investigation in 1921 with some students in Meisterschwanden , where he determined the exact location and dimensions of the Neolithic lakeside settlement ("pile dwellings") in Erlenhölzli . In 1922 he founded the "Historical Association Seengen" (today " Historical Association Seetal and Surroundings "), whose field of activity includes the entire Seetal from Lenzburg to Hochdorf . In the winter of 1922/23, Bosch carried out extensive explorations in the Roman Markstein estate near Seengen and from 1923 to 1925 in the Late Bronze Age lakeside settlement of Seengen-Riesi . In the years 1925 to 1928 he researched a Neolithic necropolis in Zigiholz near Sarmenstorf and not far from it a Roman villa in Murimooshau . In 1931/32 the burial mounds from the Hallstatt period in Fornholz and Niederholz near Seon were examined . In 1938 he led the excavation of the Stone Age «pile building» Seematte near Hitzkirch .

As a board member of the Historical Society of the Canton of Aargau , the Pro Vindonissa Society and the Aargau Association for Homeland Protection, he was instrumental in founding the Aargau Homeland Association around 1925, the umbrella organization for the many regional organizations relating to local history research, homeland protection and nature conservation.

In the course of an ordinance issued in 1943 for the protection of antiquities and architectural monuments, Reinhold Bosch was appointed canton archaeologist in Aargau , the first canton archaeologist in German-speaking Switzerland. He carried out this activity part-time until 1947 and full-time from 1947 to 1960. The new office included a. the protection of monuments , the organization of archaeological finds, the cooperation in the preservation of archaeological excavations and the recovery of finds. From 1946, Bosch was also on the board of directors of the Swiss Society for Prehistory (now Archeology Switzerland ), which he chaired from 1952 to 1955.

Bosch was married to Ida Bosch-Siegrist, daughter of the parish clerk and councilor Wilhelm Siegrist. He died on December 24, 1973 at the age of 86.

Act

Bosch's publications are characterized by a great variety. They cover a wide range of cultural history, in particular the canton of Aargau and the Seetal, but have also been taken into account beyond Switzerland. In difficult research questions, he also called in domestic and foreign experts. As early as 1928, the Archaeological Institute of the German Empire (today the German Archaeological Institute ) appointed him a corresponding member.

In his work on prehistoric topics, Bosch always tried to understand the respective technical abilities of the people through experimental archeology . For example, he set up a “Stone Age workshop” in Hallwyl Castle . He often tried to get archaeological and historical evidence on the spot and bring it closer to the population. His pedagogical character is expressed in many publications .

Through his work as a teacher, researcher, journalist and organizer, Bosch created the prerequisites for the well-organized institutions of archaeological and art and cultural history preservation in the canton of Aargau today.
