Staraja Ladoga ( Russian Старая Ладога ; until 1703 Ladoga ) is a village in Leningrad Oblast in Russia . In the 8th century, the oldest and largest settlement of Scandinavian Varangians in Eastern Europe was located here . Until 1703 Ladoga had city rights.

geography

Staraya Ladoga is located about 15 kilometers south of the mouth of the Volkhov in Lake Ladoga .

It belongs to Volkhovsky Rajon , is located about 10 km north of its center Volkhov and is the seat of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Staroladoschskoje, to which 16 other villages belong. The total population of the municipality is 2573 (as of October 14, 2010).

history

Around 750 a settlement was built in Ladoga, which was named after the Ladoga lake or the small left Volkhov tributary Ladoga (today Ladoschka or Jelena), the name of which probably goes back to the old Finnish * aaldokas - "wavy". The oldest ascertained dendrological date is 753. The construction of the system and finds indicate Scandinavian settlers.

The area was up to 12 hectares and was the largest known Scandinavian settlement in Eastern Europe, comparable to the settlements in Birka and Haithabu . There were workshops, among other things, for the production of glass and pearls based on the Arab model. The oldest Arabic coin found in Europe from 786 was found here. In 862 the Varangian Rjurik is said to have begun his rule over the Rus.

The center of Staraya Ladoga is an old fortification at the point where the Jelena joins the Volkhov. In this respect, the place was located at a strategically important point, as there was the only port for ships that could not navigate the Volkhov.

Tsar Peter the Great founded Novaya Ladoga ("New Ladoga") at the mouth of the Volkhov in Lake Ladoga in 1703 and renamed the old Ladoga (originally Aldogaborg ) to Staraya Ladoga ("Old Ladoga").

In 2003, the 1250th anniversary of the founding was celebrated by Vladimir Putin among others in the centuries-old Russian metropolis.
