Master of the Fröndenberg Altar: Fröndenberg Altar, middle picture: Mary with child, around 1400

The Gothic painter is known as the master of the Fröndenberg Altar , who painted pictures of a St. Mary's altar for the church of the Cistercian monastery in Fröndenberg around 1400 . The artist who is not known by name was probably active in the workshop of Conrad von Soest or one of his successors.

The Fröndenberg Altar is a special example of early Gothic panel paintings in German-speaking countries. It showed pictures from the life of Mary and was probably divided in the 19th century. The altar in the church, which was later used as the collegiate church of a women's monastery , is therefore only partially preserved there today, other parts can be found in the Westphalian State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster and in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, other parts have been lost.

The central panel of the Fröndenberg Altar was acquired by the university lecturer, art collector and co-founder of the Westphalian Art Association Alexander Haindorf in the 19th century and with his collection a basis for the Landesmuseum Münster.
