Vincent Fountain

The Vinzenzbrunnen on Aachen's Münsterplatz is a fountain consecrated in 1847 , which the Aachen sculptors Wilhelm Josef Wings and Gottfried Götting created based on a design by the Aachen city architect Friedrich Joseph Ark .

The fountain replaced an older fountain that stood in the same place. The current fountain housing made of Heilbronn sandstone originally stood on two steps and was designed according to the Gothic style of the adjacent choir hall , the Anna and Matthias chapels of the Aachen Cathedral. The column, built on a square plan, is decorated on all four sides with statues that are housed in niches. However, the figurative decoration could not be completed until 1877 for financial reasons. The figures come from the hand of Götting. Above the niches, the fountain is adorned with a turret in the middle and eight pinnaclesThe four smaller ones stand on the sides behind the gables of the niches, the rest over the edges of the fountain.

The side facing the Aachen Cathedral is adorned with a figure of Mary , which is why the fountain is sometimes called the Marienbrunnen or Marian column . Below the statue is the access to the water supply line of the fountain.

The opposite, the former St. Vincent Hospital of Elisabethinnen (Sisters of St. Elizabeth, and today there is the building of the Sparkasse Aachen ) and directed towards the side of the road shows as a character Saint Vincent de Paul. . Below is the water outlet carved into a sun face with a small collecting basin.

The west side shows a figure of the Archangel Michael . The side facing east, towards St. Foillan , bears a figure of St. Bishop Foillan . Below these figures the fountain is decorated with the city arms.

The fountain was originally enclosed by a wrought iron grille, which was removed at the beginning of the 20th century. War damage to the fountain was repaired by the Bardenberg sculptor Heinrich Derichs in 1951 with financial help from what was then Stadtsparkasse Aachen, under the direction of the preservationist Hans Königs . Today the fountain stands on a three-tier, octagonal pedestal made of bluestone .
