Axel Graatkjaer

Axel Graatkjær (born Axel Sørensen ; born January 19, 1885 , † November 13, 1969 in Aarhus ) was a Danish cameraman .

Life

He began in 1906 as an employee of Ole Olsen's Nordisk Films Kompagni and was a permanent cameraman of the numerous short films by Viggo Larsen , including the successful lion hunt in Ellore (1907). In 1910 he changed his name from Axel Sørensen to "Graatkjær". With August Blom , Graatkjær directed the sequel Den hvide Slavehandel (1910/11), ballet dancer with Asta Nielsen in the lead role and an early film adaptation of Hamlet (1911).

In 1913 Graatkjær went to Berlin, where he was behind the camera for all of Urban Gad's Asta Nielsen films until 1916 . He worked several times with his colleague Karl Freund . He came into contact with important German directors and filmed for Richard Oswald , Carl Froelich , Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau , Leopold Jessner , Robert Wiene and Paul Czinner , among others .

With the start of the sound film era , Graatkjær's career ended in 1930 and he went back to Denmark.
