action

Elena comes from a humble background. She became a half-orphan early on, and when her father married a new woman, the new stepmother threw her out of her own parental home. Left to her own devices, Elena soon meets a piano teacher who seduces her but does not marry her; supposedly because he's too poor for that. When she met the musician Peter Karvan through him, her living conditions deteriorated rapidly. This cabaret entertainer is a charismatic and rude guy who makes her emotionally dependent and lets Elena work for her as a prostitute.

Elena, however, is able to break away from the diabolical and selfish nihilist and finds a job as an educator with the wealthy businessman Albert Peters. Soon she becomes the mistress of her married employer. When his wife dies, Elena and Peters get married, but soon she falls in love with his brother Fritz. To make matters worse, Karven never completely lost sight of Elena. One day he shows up again and tries to blackmail Elena. Disgusted by her past life, the manufacturer throws his wife out of his house. Karven, who now believes that he has power over her again, lets Elena appear as a Tingeltangelsängerin, until she first kills Karven and then shoots herself out of an exuberant life.

Production notes

Der Reigen , sometimes under the longer title Der Reigen - Ein Werdegang , was created in the winter of 1919/20 in the Bioscop studio in Neubabelsberg and, despite the fact that the names are identical, is not an adaptation of the drama by Arthur Schnitzler, which premiered in Germany at the end of the same year . The author tried hard to defend himself against a connection to the film of almost the same name when he had a statement printed in the New Vienna Journal after the Vienna premiere on September 30, 1920. There it says:

“Some cinema theaters announce the performances of a film The Reigen , with the addition of Schnitzler's novel. I hereby state that the film Der Reigen has nothing more in common with my sequence of scenes Reigen than the title, which appears to have been changed, so to speak, by the preceding article. Since this change was by no means sufficient to rule out confusion with the series of scenes I wrote and an occasional misleading use of my name , as the author of the film Der Reigen , who is unknown to me, was able to foresee, I reserve the right to take further steps on this occasion . "

The Reigen was premiered on February 27, 1920 in Berlin and was not censored until July 17, 1920. There the six-stroke with a length of 2025 meters was banned from young people.

The film structures come from the hand of Hans Dreier . Richard Löwenbein assisted director Oswald.

criticism

The cinematographer called Der Reigen an average film, no more, found that one had seen better work from both Oswald and Nielsen and praised Veidt's performance, which was excellent as always.

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The material, photos and especially the game were excellent. The scenery is very good. "

On film.at it says: “Oswald shows a series of erotic relationships, but not the Schnitzler. He turns the perspective and gives him an interesting social class foundation. (...) The dance dance is a women's drama. It also reports on the insecurity and unsteadiness of feelings. Only at the very end does Nielsen manage to free herself from the web of her desire and being desired. The price for regaining her ability to act is high: she kills the man she probably loved most and who used her most shamelessly. "
