The Journey around the Earth in 80 Days is a German silent film comedy from 1919 by Richard Oswald . Conrad Veidt starred in this second well-known adaptation of the famous novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne .

action

The well-known story of the gentleman Phileas Fogg is retold in a humorous and satirical-parodistic form, who in a noble club with some members makes the bet to be able to circumnavigate the world within 80 days. His faithful servant Passepartout accompanies him on this journey full of adventure and is always at his side during his adventures on three continents. Fogg's opponent Archibald Corsican follows him around the globe.

Meanwhile, Fogg is wanted on a wanted record because he is accused of robbing the Bank of England just before he left . An insurance detective named Fix, who mostly gets in his own way because of his overzealousness, clings to Fogg's heels. But he manages to return home in time and win the bet.

Production notes

The film was shot in October / November 1918, just before the end of the First World War . The eight-act film was premiered in the Marble House in Berlin on March 20, 1919. The film was subsequently censored on July 8, 1921. Since there had been difficulties with Jules Verne's heirs because of the title, it was decided in 1921 to rename the film The trip around the world . The film also opened in Vienna on May 23, 1919.

As early as 1913 there was a German variation of this film material under the title The Hunt for the Hundred Pound Note or The Journey Around the World , which is considered lost.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: "Humor and games excellent, photos and scenery very good."
