The Last Half Hour: The Mayerling Story is an American television short film from 1951 by Richard Oswald , which recreates the tragedy of Mayerling (1889) with a few scenes.

action

This television pilot retraces the tragic story of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary and his beloved Mary Vetsera, who is not yet of legal age . Rudolf stands in sharp contrast to his arch-conservative father, the Austrian emperor , who also disapproves of his relationship with the young baroness. While Rudolf, who was unhappily married to Crown Princess Stephanie , pleads for urgently needed reforms in the multi-ethnic Habsburg Empire, the old monarch relies entirely on hardship and his secret police. This leads to a rupture between father and son. In the end, Rudolf, deeply resigned, retires with his lover to the Mayerling hunting lodge , where he first kills Baroness Mary and then himself.

Production notes

The Mayerling Story was the last production by Richard Oswald, who was 70 at the time of shooting. The half-hour short film was also Oswald's only TV contribution in his 40 years behind the camera. The film was not shown in Germany.
