Nachtgestalten is a German horror film from 1920 based on the fantastic novel Eleagabal Kuperus by Karl Hans Strobl .

The richest man in the world, Thomas Referenz, is a lonely, domineering and cruel cripple who has difficulty moving on crutches. He feels a fanatical love for his son, whom he keeps in a cage like a monkey that climbs trees and feeds on nuts. His servants are muscled and disfigured dwarfs. His secretary is only trying to get his hands on assets. A dancer leaves him. Since makes him an unemployed inventor an offer: Reference gives him his nymphomaniac daughter in marriage, in turn, this gets an invention of air the oxygen escapes. Reference wants to blackmail the whole world and usurp world domination . After the wedding, however, his new son-in-law tells him coldly that he lied and consequently had not invented anything.
