occupation

The Pale Bet is a Dutch fiction film from 1934 directed by Richard Oswald . Johannes Heesters , then still called Johan Heesters, played his first supporting role in talkies here. The film is based on a 1917 stage play by Herman Bouber .

action

The story takes place in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam. The title-giving company runs a vegetable shop there and is busy smuggling margarine; a business that she runs together with her neighbor van Santen. Bet would like to pair her daughter Jans with his son Hannes, but Jans is already engaged to Ko Monje, a sailor who, in her opinion, has nothing to offer Jans. All attempts by Bets to piss off Ko Jans, however, fail. It was only when Ko Jans moved once and Bet immediately claimed that she had seen the sailor accompanied by two girls that her intrigue began to bear fruit. And again Bet Jans urges to finally give Hannes a chance and marry him. Jans and Ko have one last discussion before the handsome sailor has to set sail the following morning.

One day Jans received the news that Kos' ship had sunk. Three months passed and Bet got a telegram stating that Ko had survived. Bet discusses with Van Santen what should be done now, and both come to the conclusion that it is better not to tell anyone in Jordaan about this (good) news and to keep everyone believing that Ko has drowned. Jans now gives up all hope of seeing her loved one again and finally agrees to marry the unloved Hannes. Another resident named Ka is very angry about this and thinks that it is tasteless to want to marry someone so early after Kos's alleged death. Just before the two of them can get married, Ko reappears in the Jordaan. Jans is already wearing her wedding dress, storms to her lover and falls into Ko's arms. Bet is completely surprised, and while Ko and Jans are now able to get married, van Santen is arrested by the police for his smuggling activities.

Reviews

The contemporary criticism in the Netherlands was only moderately enthusiastic about the remake of the old theater material; after all, a new discovery by the name of Johan Heesters was celebrated, whose voice has a "sympathetic and excellent sound".

“One of the first Dutch feature films that were not made in the studio, but tried to be documentary in the environment. Some things still seem like paper mache and cliché, also because of the poor management of the actors. "
