Die Arche is a German science fiction silent film from 1919 by Richard Oswald . The film is based on the Ullstein novel The Last People by Werner Scheff .

action

The ship designer Walter Fahr has built a submarine that is to go on its maiden voyage under the leadership of Captain Donken. Astronomy professor Sotuma also wants to come along, but Fahr refuses to ask him. The Japanese then secretly smuggled himself among the invited guests and in this way still got on board. The dive goes smoothly, but you have problems surfacing because, surprisingly, the pump valves have disappeared. Work is feverishly on board to manufacture replacement valves, while the fellow passengers are gradually becoming uneasy.

It turns out that Sotuma is responsible for the absence. He is forced to pull out the stolen valves so that the boat cannot emerge. However, Prof. Sotuma is by no means a saboteur, rather he had good reasons for his action: The tail of Lund's comet, which passes the earth, is so heavily enriched with carbon monoxide that a stay on earth at the decisive moment all human life extinguished. The ascent of the submarine shows that Sotuma was right in his assertion. The submarine drivers discover a passenger ship, board it and have to realize that all passengers on board are dead. Then the boat starts the journey home with the last people.

Production notes

The Ark was made in the summer of 1919. The film premiered on September 16, 1919. The seven-act film was 2,481 meters long in Germany. The sequel came to the cinemas in October 1919 with The Last People . In this film, the focus of the plot was the re-establishment of human existence on earth with only three women.
