His last mask is a German silent film drama from 1916 by Richard Oswald .
action
One day, court actor Friedrich Daland met Mary, a young up-and-coming girl who became his pupil, and fell in love with her. Although the young woman is in love with her colleague Volkmer, she marries Daland. Two years later, during a performance by Daland at the opera, he was sent a terrible despatch from his mother-in-law: "Mary drowned while sailing." must be admitted to an appropriate sanatorium.
Dismissed as cured after years, the court actor sees his wife, who was believed dead, one day. He follows Mary and secretly penetrates her apartment, where she has been living in close harmony with Volkmer for some time. Soon the betrayed realizes that he has become the victim of a malicious intrigue. Daland seeks revenge. He secretly lets himself be employed as a prompter at the venue where Mary and Volkmer are engaged and pours sleep powder into his beer as Othello shortly before his performance . So this is canceled, and Friedrich steps in instead. In the killing scene with Othello and Desdemona, played by Mary, Daland appears and strangles his unfaithful wife as Othello on stage. The audience applauds frenetically in the face of such realism until the murder is discovered. Daland, insane, is led away.
