The sign of Cain is a German silent film from 1917 by Richard Oswald .
action
The wealthy Werner Jensen stipulated in his will that his two nephews Herbert and Jakob Jensen and Herbert's daughter Felicitas Jensen should enjoy his inheritance. That doesn't suit Jakob Jensen at all, as he's after all of the inheritance after all. In fact, he succeeds in stealing the entire inheritance. Five years later he wants to increase his fortune by marrying Therese van Eick, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. But he is rejected by Therese. Thereupon Jakob ambushes Therese and rapes her. So dishonored, her father sees vigilante justice as the only way to make amends and shoots Jakob down without any witnesses.
His brother Herbert is arrested as a murderer because it is suspected that there is a connection with the old will disputes, from which Jakob emerged as the nefarious victor. Herbert is brought to justice. Eventually he is acquitted. Nevertheless, the sign of Cain sticks to him - the suspicion of having murdered his own brother, like Cain once did Abel . Herbert is socially ostracized and from then on has to endure numerous humiliations, suspicions and other ailments. This time only comes to an end when old van Eick reports himself and admits the killing.
Production notes
After filming in autumn 1917, Das Kainszeichen passed censorship in December of the same year and was banned from young people. The premiere of the four-, five- or six-act film, depending on the cut, took place in March 1918 in Berlin's Tauentzienpalast . The version shown in Vienna was a few minutes longer than the German version.
