action

One day the village mayor Horvath brings a ragged, run-down man to his house. His name is Ferencz, and so that he has a future, the mayor hires him as his clerk. As soon as he arrived, Ferencz began to hook up with Czenczi, the daughter of his patron and sponsor, even though she was already engaged. Finally the young woman gives in to his wooing.

When Horvath finds out about this, he is extremely angry and wants to throw Ferencz, the ungrateful, out of his house again. But Czenczi, who wants to leave with Ferencz the next day, gets ahead of him and hides her new lover in the basement, where she locks Ferencz as a precaution. But then she becomes seriously ill and has to stay in bed for six weeks, during which she loses consciousness. In the meantime, Ferencz is starving. It later turns out that he was a murderer.
