The Eternal Night is a German silent film drama from 1914 to 1916 with Asta Nielsen .
action
The ambitious young sculptor Norbert finds his ideal model in Martha, whom he met at the art institute. Martha, who is blind to “eternal night”, hopes to see more in him soon and has hopes for a future together. But then, when he won first prize in a competition with her sculpture, Norbert ignored her and turned to the young aristocrat Ulrike von Barzau, whom he eventually married.
Now Norbert's sculptor colleague and friend Paul is there to take care of Martha. She soon developed her own skills and became a talented harpist in a ladies' band. When Norbert reports back to create another work of art with Martha as a model, the blind woman draws hope again. And again the sculptor rejects them after completing his work. Beside herself with disappointment, Martha first destroys his sculpture and finally herself.
Production notes
The Eternal Night , subtitle: Mimic drama , is one of Asta Nielsen's lesser-known films. The three-act film with a length of 1039 meters was probably shot in the Union Atelier, Berlin-Tempelhof , Oberlandstrasse, immediately before the outbreak of the First World War and was banned by the first censors on September 15, 1915 for the duration of the war. After the second censorship three months later, Die Ewige Nacht only received a youth ban. The German premiere finally took place on February 11, 1916. In Vienna, the film was presented to the public on January 14, 1916.
The film structures were made by Fritz Seyffert, Ernst Körner was assistant director and production manager.
