action

Manor Bergmann and his wife employ Annie as a maid. When she becomes pregnant by a relative of her employer, she is fired. Only one friend, Johann, continues to stand by her. Annie gives birth to the child who grows up with the miners without a mother.

After a few years, Johann helps her kidnap the child; however, the act is punished with prison. When he was released, the vengeful Johann set fire to Bergmann's property. Annie dies while trying to save the child from being burned.

reception

The film premiered on September 16, 1911 in Berlin and received 32 newspaper reviews, which was viewed as a great success for the still young medium of feature film.

The film, an "explicit reminiscence of the Laterna Magica", was controversial because of the portrayal of an illegitimate mother. In Sweden it was banned, in Germany it was defended by the maternity protection association .
