Zapatas Bande is a short German silent film fun play from 1914 with Asta Nielsen in the lead role.

action

A German film team with the Danish star Asta Nielsen travels to Italy to make a film about a band of robbers. Asta's role is said to be that of the robber chief Zapata. But soon the crew comes under real robbers who steal all of their civilian clothes. Now the actors are forced to temporarily walk around in their film clothes, i.e. in the robber gang outfit. As a result, locals believe that the film actors must be real robbers, with Asta as their leader.

A young Italian countess is so enthusiastic about the daring-looking troop in her enthusiastic robber romance that she immediately falls in love with "the leader", Asta. Asta does not clear them up immediately, not least because there is a considerable language barrier between the two. In this way the purity of innocent love is preserved, and it doesn’t take long before the involuntary “band of robbers”, arrested by the village gendarme, is set free again.

Production notes

Zapata's gang was formed in the winter of 1913/14 in Marina di Massa, Italy, in the Gulf of La Spezia and managed without studio recordings or decorations. The film structures designed by Fritz Seyffert were brought to Italy from Germany and assembled as a large open-air theater in Marina di Massa. The short film measured 752 meters on two acts and passed the German film censorship on February 10, 1914. The premiere took place on February 27, 1914. In Austria-Hungary, Zapata's gang was introduced to the public in March of the same year.

Reviews

“Asta Nielsen is celebrating another triumph. In the film joke Zapatas Gang she is the leading actress and with great skill she knows how to play the leader of a band of robbers. The mistake of a group of actors for the band of robbers caused great amusement in the audience. "

- The day of March 2, 1914

“The new Asta-Nielsen picture Zapatas Bande […], a film joke in 2 acts, which humorously depicts the adventurous experiences of a film actor in a region of Italy plagued by robbers, is very good . […] You don't need to say that Asta Nielsen, who is always at ease in men's clothes, shows great exuberance and brings happiness to her account. "

- Cinematographische Rundschau of March 22, 1914, p. 98.

"Asta Nielsen shines in this 'film joke' as a robber captain who is thrown at the neck by a daughter from a good family and who can barely defend himself from their pursuits."

- Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation
