Love and Thieves is a German silent film comedy from 1928 by Carl Froelich with Henny Porten in the leading role.

action

Baroness Anna von Belling, who is staying in a noble Wiesbaden hotel, has her jewelery, valuable diamonds, stolen. She takes up the pursuit of the thief with her own hands and is promptly mistaken for an impostor who has long been wanted by the police. Taken into custody, Ms. von Belling is only released the moment her own uncle confirms her identity.

The hotel guest who made themselves particularly suspicious in their eyes turns out to be a detective and their stolen jewelry to be false. As if by coincidence, the real thief Anna Magdalena Kaludrigkeit, known internally by the police as "Brilliant Anna", appears, who has just returned from a thief tour and bears a striking resemblance to her noble namesake. After all the confusion, Baroness Anna and the Police Commissioner von Langen who are handling the case have come closer to each other and are getting married.

The buildings were designed by Franz Schroedter , while Porten's husband Wilhelm von Kaufmann took over the production management.

criticism

On March 31, 1928, Vienna's Neue Freie Presse reported on the occasion of the Austrian premiere: “It's not everything that pretends to be a comedy, not everything that tries to be amusing. (…) In the hallelujah of this triumphant finale, however, the unavoidable regret that Henny Porten, who has so often proven herself as an excellent comedy actress full of humor, is now wasting her skills on such a humorous affair. Where there are no text ideas, even the best actress has lost the right - namely the right to be effective. And with astonishment one wonders why so many draw for this piece, since there is so little that is significant. "

In Paimann's film lists it can be read: “The subject is quite amusing, even if greater precision in working through this underlying criminal affair would have been an advantage. The direction is continuous, brings nice details, and knows how to use the ensemble well. The presentation is, with the exception of a few scenes, as well as the photography quite satisfactory. - Overall qualification: above average. "
