Hans Christian Korting

Hans Christian Korting (born March 21, 1952 in Tübingen ; † February 25, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German dermatologist and allergist .

Life

Korting studied medicine from 1970 to 1976 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , where he also received his doctorate in 1977 . From 1977 to 1979 he received a partial microbiological training in central medical services of the Bundeswehr. Further training to become a dermatologist took place at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Dermatology and Allergology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he completed his habilitation in 1985. He worked at this clinic until 2011, most recently as professor and senior academic director.

The focus of his scientific work was the characterization of the development of localized fungal infections of the skin and the mucous membranes close to the skin. The focus is on secreted aspartate proteinases from Candida albicans as a virulence factor and toll-like receptors as relevant mediators of the inflammatory host response . One of the main goals is to develop active pharmaceutical ingredients for the treatment and prevention of fungal infections . The focus is on peptides or peptidomimetics, which are able to inhibit secreted aspartate proteinases from yeasts. This reflects a paradigm shift in antimicrobial therapy towards drugs that specifically influence the virulence of pathogens. There is also interest in the development of further active pharmaceutical ingredients, on the one hand biotechnological drugs (such as plasmin ) and on the other hand small molecules. This applies equally to sphingosine-1-phosphate , which is able to influence signal transduction in the context of inflammation of the skin , and to inhibitors of human polymerase-alpha, of the nucleotide analogue type, which are intended to be used to treat pale skin cancer.

He has received a number of scientific prizes, including a. the Paul Gerson Unna Prize of the German Dermatological Society (DDG) and the Research Promotion Prize of the German -speaking Mycological Society .

He was treasurer on the board of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF), as a member of the board and head of the quality assurance commission in the German Dermatological Society (DDG), as deputy chairman in the Society for Dermopharmacy, which he co-founded . For the German-speaking Mycological Society he was a. a. active as chairman, in 2010 he was awarded honorary membership. Since 2010, Korting has been a member of the Executive Committee of CIOMS (Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences). He was also a member of the European Dermatology Forum, a panel of 200 leading European dermatologists.

He was editor of the internationally recognized journal Mycoses as well as co-editor and member of the advisory board of a number of other journals, including a. International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents , Phytomedicine , American Journal of Clinical Dermatology , Skin Pharmacology and Physiology , Dermatologist and JDDG .

According to the Web of Knowledge, Hans Christian Korting has published 428 recorded scientific papers that have been cited 5,062 times. The Hirsch index is 38. The number of books he (co-) authored or (co-) edited is around 20.

Hans Christian Korting was married to Monika Schäfer-Korting . He is buried in the Dahlem forest cemetery.
