New Place

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New Place is the name of the house in Stratford-upon-Avon that William Shakespeare bought for himself and his family for £ 60 in 1597. He lived there after retiring from 1610 until his death in 1616.

New Place stood here until 1759

The house was on Chapel Street. It was built in 1483 by Hugh Clopton, a wealthy merchant and later mayor of London . In Shakespeare's day it was the second largest house in Stratford and the only one made entirely of brick, contrary to the usual half-timbered style.

The house was later inhabited by Shakespeare's heirs, daughter Susanna Hall and later granddaughter Elizabeth Hall. It was then sold to the Clopton family, descendants of the original builders. In 1759, the house was pulled down by its owner at the time, Francis Gastrell, because he was annoyed by the constant stream of curious tourists. Today there is only a small garden at this point, which can be entered through the adjacent Nash House, which also serves as a museum, and a notice board.
