Monika Schäfer-Korting (born May 7, 1952 in Giessen ) is a German pharmacologist and toxicologist .

Life

Schäfer-Korting studied pharmacy from 1971 to 1975 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In 1976 he was licensed as a pharmacist. In 1977 she received her doctorate from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University under Ernst Mutschler . There she has also 1989 habilitation . In 1994 she was appointed to the newly established pharmacology chair in the Pharmacy Department of the Free University of Berlin , where she is still active today. Since June 2007 she has been Vice President of the Free University of Berlin again , and since June 3, 2010 she has held the position of First Vice President. Monika Schäfer-Korting was married to Hans Christian Korting from 1980 until his death in 2012 .

Act

From 2002 to 2008 she was the spokesperson for the DFG research group “Innovative Drugs and Carrier Systems - Integrative Optimization for the Treatment of Inflammatory and Hyperproliferative Diseases” (FG 463) and was the coordinator of the BMBF joint project: “Validation study for testing skin penetration using biotechnologically produced skin models "(FKZ 0312881). Schäfer-Korting is currently the project leader in the NanoDerm consortium, which aims to develop nanoparticle- based dermatics for therapy-resistant skin diseases - in the context of the NanoForLife program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Schäfer-Korting was co-author of the pharmacology and toxicology textbook “Mutschler. Drug effects ". She publishes the book series "Optimized Medicinal Therapy" at Springer Verlag Heidelberg and the book series "The Critical Drug Monograph (TCDM)" at ABW Verlag Berlin. She is a member of the editorial board of the journals Skin Pharmacology and Physiology and Mycoses , as well as chairwoman of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment , Berlin. In 2010 she ended her long service on the board of the Society for Dermopharmacy .

A scientific focus of the work is the characterization of the risk / benefit ratio of drugs. In 1999 she and Hans Christian Korting published the monograph: “The Benefit / Risk Ratio: A Handbook of the Rational Use of Potentially Hazardous Drugs”. Topical glucocorticoids with an improved risk / benefit ratio, such as prednicarbate , represent a paradigm . With the aim of developing novel drugs specifically for skin diseases , she is investigating signal transduction in tissues. Sphingosine-1-phosphate and its receptor are of particular interest . The prodrug concept plays an essential role in drug development . As early as the development of new active ingredients, the formulation is also reconsidered. There is particular interest in drug carrier systems relevant to the skin such as liposomes and nanostructured lipidic carriers. In this context, inhibitors of human polymerase-alpha, of the nucleotide analogue type, with aphidicolin as the lead substance, are being developed as new active pharmaceutical ingredients. Preparations on this basis are intended to be used for the treatment of light skin cancer, especially actinic keratosis. With the aim of saving animal experiments in the context of toxicological studies, animal substitute experiments are developed and evaluated based on skin models (OECD prevalidation and validation studies).

Schäfer-Korting is the author of 104 publications covered by the Web of Science , which have been cited 1,459 times. The Hirsch index is 22.
