Cordt von Brandis (General)

Cordt Freiherr von Brandis (born June 27, 1874 in Erbach ; † April 11, 1945 in Berlin-Zehlendorf ) was a German officer , most recently Major General of the Reichswehr (1929) or characterized Lieutenant General (1939).

Life

Brandis joined the infantry regiment “Kaiser Wilhelm” (2nd Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 116 on March 22, 1892 as an ensign . On May 22, 1893 he was promoted to second lieutenant there. On October 1, 1897, he was assigned to the Marienwerder NCO School and three years later he was transferred to the infantry regiment "Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig" (East Frisian) No. 78 . After his promotion to first lieutenant on September 12, 1902, he became adjutant of the Aurich district command shortly thereafter on October 1 . There he became a captain on April 20, 1910 and as such a company commander in his regiment on January 27, 1911 . He was transferred to the 4th Hanoverian Infantry Regiment No. 164 on February 15, 1913 and Brandis took over as chief of the 9th Company.

He and his unit were deployed on the Western Front after the outbreak of World War I and the mobilization . In February 1915 he was appointed commander of the III. Battalion and on August 18, 1916 promotion to major . Brandis took over Storm Battalion 8 in July 1918 and was appointed commander of the Grenadier Regiment "Kronprinz" (1st East Prussian) No. 1 two months later .

After the end of the war, his regiment in Königsberg was demobilized and disbanded. Brandis was accepted into the provisional Reichswehr and initially served as a battalion commander in the 20th Infantry Regiment. After his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel on July 1, 1921, Brandis joined the staff of the 16th Infantry Regiment in Oldenburg . In February 1925 Brandis was admixed to the staff of the 1st Cavalry Division to Frankfurt an der Oder . When he was promoted to colonel on April 1, 1926, he became a course director at the Dresden Infantry School . On February 1, 1928 Brandis was appointed commander of the 15th Infantry Regiment in Kassel and promoted to major general on October 1, 1929 . Brandis handed over the command on January 31, 1930 to his successor Colonel Erich von Schickfus and Neudorff and was honored and retired on the same day.

On August 27, 1939, the so-called Tannenberg Day , he was given the character of Lieutenant General.

Cordt von Brandis died four weeks before the end of the Second World War at the age of 70 in Berlin and was buried in the Dahlem forest cemetery. The grave has not been preserved.
