War Merit Cross

The War Merit Cross was donated by Duke Ernst August von Braunschweig on October 23, 1914 for combatants and on November 17, 1915 for non-combatants . On March 20, 1918, the first class and the probation badge were awarded.

The award could be given to people regardless of rank or status for service in the war.

The medal has the shape of a paw cross and is made of bronze . It shows the initials of the founder E A(Ernst August) in the middle of the front and the ducal crown in the cross arms above , the year below 1914and two oak leaves in the left and right cross arms .

The 1st class was worn as a cross on the left side of the chest. The second class on a dark blue ribbon with sulfur yellow side stripes (sulfur yellow with dark blue side stripes for non-combatants) on the left chest. The probation badge as a badge on the second class ribbon.
