Death by assassination

Gravestone for Richard and Fritz von Weizsäcker at the Dahlem forest cemetery

On the evening of November 19, 2019, Fritz von Weizsäcker was killed by a presumably mentally ill person with a stab in the neck in the rooms of the Schlosspark Clinic towards the end of a public lecture he gave. A police officer who was not on duty rushed to the rescue and was seriously injured by the attacker. The policeman's life was saved by an emergency operation. The Berlin public prosecutor's office assumes a “ delusional general aversion” to the von Weizsäcker family. The attacker was taken to a psychiatric hospital at the request of the prosecutor. In July 2020 he was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Berlin district court . In addition, placement in a psychiatric clinic was ordered. Fritz von Weizsäcker was 59 years old. He was buried on December 2, 2019 next to his father's grave at the Dahlem Forest Cemetery.
