Athletic career

In 1974 Holger Döbbel came from ZLG Atzendorf to the youth team of 1. FC Magdeburg . As a junior player, he developed into a quick starter. He played four international matches with the GDR junior national team. At the age of 18, while still a student, he was already in the GDR Oberliga squad of Magdeburg, with whom he played his first competitive game on March 25, 1978 in the semi-final second leg of the GDR Cup competition BFC Dynamo - 1. FCM (1: 1). Then the FCM was in the cup final, which he won 1-0 against Dynamo Dresden, but without Chub. This came to his first use in the GDR Oberliga on April 8, 1978 in the encounter Chemie Böhlen - 1. FCM (1-0), where he came on as a substitute for center forward Joachim Streich . By the end of the season, the 1.76 m tall Döbbel had played a total of eight first division games. He was unable to prevail against Streich, Hoffmann , Tyll and Co. in the long run and until the end of the first half of the 1980/81 season was only used in 21 point games, four national and three European cup games, in which he scored four point goals brought. For the 1980/81 season he was officially registered only for the junior league team of the FCM.

For the 1981/82 season, Döbbel, who had meanwhile completed his vocational training as a lathe operator, is no longer included in the FCM's roster for both the GDR Oberliga and the junior league. In the summer of 1983 he signed up for the GDR league club Stahl Brandenburg, coming from third-class Stahl Oranienburg . With 25 games in the second-rate GDR league and the promotion round and with 16 goals, he was one of the guarantors for promotion to the GDR league. In his new league season, Döbbel played all 26 point games for Stahl Brandenburg in his regular position of left winger and was together with Frank Jeske the most successful goalscorer with six goals. Until the summer of 1986 it was a fixture in the steel range. In the fall of 1986 came the surprising decline, Döbbel was only used in four league league games, in none he completed the entire game.

At the beginning of the 1987/88 season Döbbel moved to the GDR league club Lok Stendal and played there until the Stendal's relegation to the district league in the summer of 1989. He then moved again to the district league club Chemistry Premnitz .
