Eichhorn began his football career at the age of nine with the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Leipzig. From there he was delegated to the Leipzig top club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in 1974 at the age of 17. A year later he was accepted into the junior national team of the GDR and played his first international junior match on July 13, 1975 within the so-called tournament of friendship in Pyongyang (North Korea). In the game GDR - Romania he was used as a midfielder. By November of that year, Eichhorn had played a total of nine international matches with the junior team. In 1976 he became GDR champion with the juniors of 1. FC Lok.

Eichhorn played his first game in the GDR league on April 30, 1977. In the encounter on the 23rd match day of the 1976/77 season 1. FC Lok - Union Berlin (3-1), he was called up as a left winger. In total, he came this season four times in the league for use. He was also on May 28, 1977 as a central midfielder in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which the Leipzig but lost 3-2 to Dynamo Dresden. At the beginning of the 1977/78 season it initially seemed as if the only 1.69 m tall Eichhorn could conquer a regular place in the first team, because he played nine of the 13 first-series games in the top division, mainly in midfield. In the second half of the season, however, he only came on six times as a substitute. Nevertheless, he came to two international matches with the GDR youth national team in May and August. In the two following seasons he did not get beyond the existence of a substitute player, in 1978/79 he played 15, 1979/80 only eight league games. The game 1. FC Lok - Wismut Aue on March 15, 1980 was his last competitive game in the 1st team of Leipzig. In his four seasons in Leipzig, he had come to 39 league games in which he had scored six goals. In addition, he had played ten times in the national and five times in the European Cup (2 and 1 goal respectively).

In the summer of 1980 Eichhorn moved to local rivals BSG Chemie Leipzig, with whom he played in the second-rate GDR league until 1982 . In the 1982/83 season he was reported as a midfielder from BSG Chemie, but did not play a point game with the 1st team and thus had no part in the team's promotion to the league. As early as November 1982 he was called up for military service. In May 1984 he returned from the army and on May 5 played a game for BSG Chemie in the league for 20 minutes. 1984/85 back in the squad of the 1st team, he completed the last three league games of his football career between the 9th and 11th matchday and thus came to a total of 43 first division games, where he had remained goalless with chemistry.

For the 1985/86 season Eichhorn joined the GDR league club Motor Grimma , where he stayed until 1988. He then played for TSG Markkleeberg , where he finally ended his football career.
